For 40 years, the reunion barbecue and the golf tournament have raised funds to perpetuate the Scholarship Program given each year in memory of Coach Kenny Morgan.

Kenny was a graduate of Howard College, now Samford University, where he was captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. At Woodlawn High School, he was more than a coach; he was a father, teacher, leader and mentor to the students, community, and family he served.

In the spring of 1964, while serving as the Birmingham City School athletics director, Kenny died due to heart complications at age 47. In 1979, some of the students he mentored decided to honor the man who helped shape their lives in a positive direction. Thus, the Kenny Morgan Scholarship began.

More than 175 scholarships have been given to deserving students attending Samford, and these students have a graduation rate nearing 95%.
